Webster Dictionary Online defines the verb "bully" as "to affect by means of force or coercion".
Today, someone I do not know personally, but many of my friends know, has been bullied into tears. She came in this morning, minding her own business, and people began to bully her because she wants to start a Gay-Straight Alliance here at school. She was crying before school started. I do not know what all went on, but I know that this is wrong.
What is the school doing about it? The student in question is in the office in tears, and the school is not doing anything.
I immediately pulled out my school issued planner with the code of conduct inside. A Class II offense, which should result in up to six hours of "out-of-school" detention (in the event of a first offense), has a harassment and bullying policy. It reads as follows:
2.09 Harassment/BullyingThe student's mother is on her way up here right now, and she is probably going to start a fight with the administration. This is my "calm", logical cry to arms against the administration. Kill them with the law. Show them that by ignoring this infraction, they are violating a law that they promised to uphold school rules.
With intent to harass, annoy, intimidate, or alarm whether socially, physically, or emotionally, a student:
A. ...
B. ...
...
E. use speech or other expression intended to insult or stigmatize others on the basis of their sex, race, color, handicap, religion, sexual orientation or national origin;
F. ...
Such activity may result in an automatic suspension of up to three (3) days from school.
I concur. Should we link them to this post on the school site? If so, I'll e-sign this petition.
